How can I improve my self esteem and stop trying to be perfect?

Ask yourself, “Why are you comparing yourself to others, and then building this state of anxiety and lack of confidence?” Is it helping? And trying to be perfect is an ideal which is reserved for some kind of nonhuman being.

And trying to be perfect is an ideal which is reserved for some kind of nonhuman being. Are you instead trying to meet someone else’s expectations and approval? Is this necessary for survival?
One of the ways I got myself out of this habit is to learn to laugh at myself, and move on. For example: I am public speaker. At one of my talks (for an audience of several hundred) I was trying to persuade my audience that the changes coming into their work lives (through the new at the time office computers) was going to be a bonanza. What I said though was, “This is going to be bananas!” The audience and I laughed together. My vulnerability showed and it helped the audience loosen their fear of change into something which could be managed.
Laugh a little. Embrace yourself, and say “I’m doing okay.”
