Q&A

Is it crazy to mourn for someone for over 35 years?

Zanna Smith

Grief changes over the years. If you lost someone when you were a child or teenager, sometimes the actual mourning (reacting to the grief) happens much later in life. Continuous mourning can happen. What would be “crazy” if there is no change in the behavior in reaction to the grief.

For example, if, when you were five years old, you lost a treasured grandparent who gave you unconditional love, it would not be odd to mourn this person at moments that reminded you of your experiences with this person, say at Christmas or your birthday. To mourn the person daily for 35 years would be a bit off the charts, though.
