Q&A

Do you need to be able to play the piano in order to play the pipe organ?

Zanna Smith

It’s helpful, but not necessary. The way you use your muscles is different, but knowing how to play any keyboard first is extremely useful. Pipe organ was my primary instrument. I play all the keyboards. It’s important to learn the different methods of holding and releasing notes for the different keyboards, but only if you plan to play different keyboards.

It’s important to learn the different methods of holding and releasing notes for the different keyboards, but only if you plan to play different keyboards. Most people who are organists also need to play piano as an accompanist, and many also need to play harpsichord, which has a different approach than either (but is closer to the organ). Neither harpsichord nor organ has a way of sustaining a note with a pedal the way a piano does.
