Q&A

What are some ways to consistently reconnect with our higher selves when we've lost our way?

Zanna Smith

I use creating and performing arts, getting underneath the words or cognitive mind. For example, I have a visual journal. The practice is simple: I write down the date, and a very brief statement about what I’m trying to resolve, then I close my eyes for a few minutes in a non thinking state.

The practice is simple: I write down the date, and a very brief statement about what I’m trying to resolve, then I close my eyes for a few minutes in a non thinking state. Next, using pens, crayons, or colored pencils, I scribble a “picture.” It doesn’t need to look like anything at all.

Half an hour or more later, I look at the scribble, either scribble some more, or see what the scribble suggests to me. You need NO artistic or psychological experience or professional to do this.

Another way I find my higher self is to dance, even if it’s just in my mind (I’m disabled physically, and sometimes can’t dance any other way).

Also, I simply get into something natural, like watching a pine tree in the breeze, or a spider weave its web.
