A good friend just committed suicide. What are some ways that I can cope with this loss and try to move on with my life?
Scribble with crayons, then write what comes to mind when you look at the scribble. No one needs to see this. Sometimes I deal with grief by getting a stack of paper and scribble-drawing on page after page. It doesn’t have to look like anything, but it gets past the words, and is an outlet for all the emotions that suicide of a friend can bring.

Grandmothers are very special in our lives, whether in body or spirit. Encourage your friend to draw a picture for herself and her grandmother. It doesn’t need to look like anything, but serve as a continued connection. Or write her grandmother a letter. Most important for you—simply being a quiet witness, holding a space for her, without expectations or judgment.

My friend is always confused about everything, so people initially always think he's a bit slow, but he is actually super smart. Why is he so confused when I talk to him if he's so smart?
Many possibilities exist for this. A very intelligent person may have Asperger’s, a high-functioning form of autism, and may not have developed the “normal” conversation behaviors and processing. There are many other neuropsychological possibilities, including lack of interest, or lack of ability to focus on external stimulus. Einstein was possibly one of these people.

What are some good things to include in a sympathy note for someone who has lost a parent?
It would depend on whether or not you knew the parent and at what level, as well as your friend, the friend’s age and relationship to the parent. One thing to remember—each person has an individual way of grieving, for each loss. If if you knew something your friend valued about the parent, you might recognize that.

I did, in 2016. Fortunately, I keep a journal. Although I didn’t remember the three months leading up to the trauma, I used my journal, friends, relatives, and medical professionals to bring it all back together. Each person’s amnesia is going to be different though.

Compassion fatigue begins gradually, then in an instant crisis blooms fully. It shuts down your ability to have “normal” emotions in all parts of your life. Intense grief differs, but has similar physiomental effects: lowered immune system, numbness, irritability, feeling your mind is out of control, memory impairment, lack of focus and concentration.
